As I began the dreaded task of marketing Empty-Nest Joyride, others told me that to draw an audience and build my platform, I should do reels and live videos on social media. The thought gave me hives. I’ve experimented a little with making reels, but I feel so awkward and unnatural as I stand there talking to my camera. I’ve tried, but so far, just can’t do it.
This week, however, I discovered the secret ingredient to pulling off live video. Surprisingly, it has nothing to do with camera angle, although making sure your face is well-lighted and not silhouetted by a bright backlit window helps. And it’s not having a memorized script, although being familiar with your topic is a plus. It’s not even about your hair and makeup, but if that builds your confidence, go for it.
What’s the secret?
Turns out, the magic comes from having a partner! Genuine connection with another human being—IMO, something Substack does better than any other platform—is what we all crave in this era of online presence.
My “Mini-Live-Virtual” book tour was natural and encouraging, and delivered an authentic version of myself. Except for the occasional internet glitch, it felt like I was sitting in a cafe, enjoying a cup of coffee with a sister.
I was simply talking with a friend—something I do whenever I can! I chatted with
, , and about self-publishing, my writing process, empty-nesting, marriage, and parenting teens and young adults. I went deeper as I divulged my creative process, my spiritual life, and where I find hope and love everyday. It all felt so natural. Was I a little nervous beforehand? Yes. Did I stumble over my words and at times draw a blank when asked a probing question. Indeed, I did. But that’s who I am in real life.
If you’d like to meet the real me—not the polished, grammatically correct, words-on-a-page version of me—go ahead and watch the replays.
I think you’ll agree that together with my lovely hosts, we found the secret ingredient. It’s connection. And friendship. And sharing our true selves with one another.
Live with Linda Cobourn
In my first live video, Linda and I delve into the process of writing and publishing a book, discuss how my kids feel about having their stories told, and chat about how Empty-Nest Joyride isn’t just for empty nesters. Linda has been one of my main writing mentors for the past three years, and her knowledge, expertise, and support shine through.
Live with Cindy Ojczyk
Cindy asks great, probing questions as we explore my marketing strategies, including using a launch, or street team—of which she was a part. She also brings me to tears (I didn’t expect that!) by asking which parts of my book make me emotional. We laugh together at one of the embarrassing moments I share in Empty-Nest Joyride. It was a joy to talk “joyride” with Cindy!
Live with Mary Beth Kaplan
As we discuss Empty-Nest Joyride, we tap into how family traditions and rituals we had when our kids were young helped shape who they are, as well as inform our family life today. Mary Beth has me dive deep into my spiritual practices, explain my creative process, and encourages me throughout with her warm and gracious acceptance.
The whole “live” experience turned out better than I expected, and I’m pretty sure my hosts would agree: “Going Live” is best when shared with a friend!
As I wrap up this post, I want to reiterate how much I value your support for me as an indie author. My three hosts are also writers, and I’d love for you to check out their Substacks and subscribe if their topics are of interest to you.
This book has come at such a great time for me. It is definitely not just for empty nesters! It's a story of a beautiful life with all its challenges, joys and hardships.
So glad you took the plunge and did it!!
